Worm Composting Project "Vers le Vert"

Santropol Roulant is aiming for zero waste and minimal emissions in its operations, and engaging our entire community in its ecological initiatives. The Worm Composting project is an integral component of this strategy as it allows us to transform all the organic and biodegradeable products that come from our kitchen into rich products for our Rooftop Garden. We are planning future "home worm composting" workshops as well, which will use techniques and supplies garnered from the work we are doing at Santropol Roulant.

The project itself is housed in Santropol Roulant's basement. The kitchen's wastes are digested by 45 kilograms of worms who live in three different containers. The containers are self-regulating, allowing for separation of compost and undigested food, thus reducing maintenance. Starting this spring, in partnership with various local community organizations, we will be holding workshops, open to the public, with the eventual aim of having people start their own worm composting at home.

If you want to get your hands dirty with the worms right now, you can register as a kitchen volunteer at Santropol Roulant!

We would like to thank Recyc-Québec's VERRR 20008 program and the Evergreen Foundation for their support in the "vers le vert" project.

This page will eventually provide tips for starting your own vermicomposting project at home! Stay tuned!
