| Santropol Roulant's Edible Campus Garden
The garden is now open. Sign up for a volunteer shift and get some precious sunshine!
How does your garden grow? Santropol Roulant's Edible Campus garden is run in partnership with Alternatives' Rooftop Garden Project and the McGill School of Architecture's Minimum Cost Housing Group. We grow mostly vegetables in over 225 containers, using a self-watering technique. Last year, we expanded the garden by converting a 100 m2 ornamental rock bed into a series of raised beds. Further expansion is expected again this year.
For information on our innovative gardening techniques, please visit rooftopgardens.ca. For more information on our partners, please visit their respective websites. What to expect? We garden collectively tackling various tasks, as layed out by the garden coordinator. The entirety of the harvest is then returned to Santropol Roulant's meals-on-wheels kitchen. Depending on the time of season and the number of volunteers, the workload goes from super busy to super chill. So you might spend one shift bent over harvesting tomatoes non-stop for 3 hours and the next shift leisurely watering the plants while chatting with a friend.
2010 Volunteer Garden Shifts:
Tuesdays 10:30-1:30pm Wednesdays 4-7pm Saturdays 10:30-1:30pm (starting May 29th)
Please note, shifts are cancelled in case of heavy rain. For pictures from our garden, please visit our flickr site.
Where to find us? Our garden is situated on McGill University's downtown campus (805 Sherbrooke St. W.), in front of Burnside Hall. Google Maps Link What to bring? Dress appropriately. You might very well get dirty. Bring a hat and sunscreen for the sun, gloves if you have some, and a water bottle in case you get thirsty. Other than that, a positive attitude is all you need. Here are a few things we always need in the garden, if you happen to have them lying around the house, then by all means please bring them over: - pantyhose for tying tomatoes
- rubber bands for bundling certain vegetables
- small amounts of kitchen scraps for our worms
